TFC says promo material is wrong; there will be no friendly this season By Charles Posted on June 7, 2011 Comments Off on TFC says promo material is wrong; there will be no friendly this season 0 853 Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Toronto FC made a statement today on a series of ads for the upcoming World Football Challenge which indicate the Reds will be part of the tournament. “No we are not part of the World Football Challenge,” said TFC director of business operations Paul Beirne. “This must have been done in error. At one point we were in discussions but the schedule doesn’t allow without compromising our team.” For the second time this week, a promotional e-mail was distributed to fans on Major League Soccer’s mailing list featuring an ad from American Airlines, an official sponsor of the WFC. On it, Toronto FC’s logo appears, indicating it is one of the participating clubs. The WFC sees some of the world’s top clubs visiting North America to play friendlies against each other and MLS opposition. As part of the series, the Vancouver Whitecaps host Manchester City on July 18. When these mailouts go out, they give the clear impression that TFC has a major international friendly scheduled that it has yet to announce. And, because this ad is coming through official MLS channels — which would mean it has to be vetted by people at the league — it only gives credibility to the theory that TFC is waiting to announce a game. Considering how easy it is to Photoshop a logo out of an ad, the sponsor (or its ad agency) and the league aren’t doing TFC a lot of favours.
