Greenhouses don’t have as many seedings as the new, improved Canadian Championship will have in 2019.

And, on Wednesday, the rumours became hard truths when MDS was named the new head coach of the Vancouver Whitecaps. MDS signed a three-year deal, and will get the MLS chance that, well, a lot of Canadian soccer followers will say is long overdue. MDS is only  41, but with his track record, it feels, well, like he's been around forever, doesn't it?

It’s not unfair to say that the new coach will be needing to do what amounts to a full-scale rebuild. And, that might only be attractive to a marquee candidate if he knows he’s going to get the keys to the kingdom.

It just wasn’t that the Whitecaps gave up five. Jozy Altidore was rampant, scoring a hat trick. The Reds were as sharp offensively as they've been all season. But, wow, were the Whitecaps bad. Awful. Insipid.

On Wednesday night, in the 95th minute of the first leg of the Canadian Championship final, Henry scored a fourth career Voyageurs Cup goal for Toronto FC. Problem is, he’s wearing a Vancouver Whitecaps jersey, now.

In the first half of Wednesday’s second leg at BC Place, the Impact fouled up a golden chance to get a needed road goal that may have effectively ended the tie.

So, when the Whitecaps call Davies “homegrown,” take that term with a bit of a grain of salt. If Free Footie isn’t mentioned in the press releases, if it’s not mentioned in the thinkpieces that will be written about the Davies transfer, well it’s a grand disservice to a great organization.

Toronto FC will be happy with an efficient 1-0 road win over the Ottawa Fury. The Montreal Impact, meanwhile, might not be so happy with its 1-0 home win over the Vancouver Whitecaps.
