Toronto FC has been able to transform Dan Gargan into defender Kyle Davies.

Gargan was sent to the Chicago Fire in July along with a second-round draft pick in exchange for veteran Dasan Robinson.

Robinson, who made only one TFC appearance in his time with the club — in the CONCACAF Champions League — was sent to the Los Angeles Galaxy Thursday in exchange for Davies, who captained the U.S. side at the 2009 U-20 World Cup.

Davies hasn’t seen much action for the veteran-laden Galaxy, but as a former top prospect who is only 22 at the moment, he gives the club another young defender to develop. And, anyone who has seen TFC this season knows the centre of defence is the club’s most pressing problem.

Davies, though, hasn’t boasted a stellar MLS resume since he came back to America after a stint at Southampton. He was traded by Real Salt Lake to FC Dallas, who waived him. He signed with the Galaxy earlier this season and hasn’t made a first-team appearance.

But, considering that most people had forgotten that Robinson even played for TFC, it’s a no-risk move made by technical director and head coach Aron Winter before the MLS roster-freeze deadline.

“We are acquiring a young central defender with leadership experience and I feel Kyle will fit into our plans both now and long-term,” said Winter in a release issued by the club.
