Ottawa Fury’s Gielnik up for W-League MVP and Rookie of the Year honours By Charles Posted on July 25, 2013 Comments Off on Ottawa Fury’s Gielnik up for W-League MVP and Rookie of the Year honours 0 701 Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Emily GielnikThe Ottawa Fury’s Australian sensation, Emily Gielnik, is a finalist for both the W-League MVP and Rookie of the Year awards. The W-League award finalists were announced Thursday. Gielnik scored four times and added two assists in 10 games for the Fury. She is up against Virginia Beach’s Shan Jones and Pali Blues’ Ashley Nick for the MVP award. It’s actually unfair for Gielnik to be considered a rookie. She spent the previous year in the English professional league, with the Liverpool women’s team. Before that, she played top-tier soccer in Australia. So, the W-League level of soccer didn’t represent a major, major step up for her. Still, she’s up against Jones, Colorado Rapid Kristen Hamilton and Atlanta Silverback Savannah Jordan for the rookie of the year honour. Two Canadians were nominated for season-end awards. Both of them come from the Laval Cometes: defender Kathryn Acton and goalkeeper Genevieve Richard, who were also named to the all-league team earlier this week (ironically, Gielnik wasn’t on that team). Laval, which is the No. 1 seed going into the W-League’s final four weekend, gave up just seven goals in 12 league games this season.
