So, on Tuesday, when Saputo pledged to turn over control of the team to new president Kevin Gilmore, it marked a massive change in direction. Cynics — myself included — will wonder just how long this kind of arrangement can last.

Toronto FC will be happy with an efficient 1-0 road win over the Ottawa Fury. The Montreal Impact, meanwhile, might not be so happy with its 1-0 home win over the Vancouver Whitecaps.

But, judging by the lukewarm reaction this has received in Canadian soccer circles so far, it's fair to say that the football followers in this country — the people who have dispatched the likes of Owen Hargreaves and Asmir Begovic into their own emotional black holes — have already given up on Tabla ever wearing Canada red again. It feels like Barcelona just signed some phenom from some other country.

But, where MLS has truly stumbled in Canada is in making itself a national concern. Basically, in this country, interest in the league is restricted to the three metro areas that have teams. The three Canadian MLS clubs have virtually no presence in the rest of Canada.

The auditions were a bit different. The first time through, the hopefuls for 21 Thunder were asked to do the usual stuff; go through scenes, show their acting ranges. But, the second time through, they had to show the producers that they could play soccer.
