Whitecaps hope for “Whiteout” in MLS opener By Charles Posted on March 18, 2011 Comments Off on Whitecaps hope for “Whiteout” in MLS opener 0 785 Share on Facebook Share on Twitter The Vancouver Whitecaps are taking a page out of the Winnipeg Jets’ book. The Whitecaps are urging their fans to turn Empire Stadium into a sea of white seats for Saturday’s MLS opener against Toronto FC, similar to the “Whiteout” campaigns the Jets ran during their playoff runs before the NHL franchise moved to Phoenix. The Coyotes have also tried the Whiteout campaign, but it’s hard to pull off with all those pesky empty seats messing up your plans. (The Coyotes/Jets lack of playoff success may give the Whitecaps pause to think about the wisdom of what the club is calling “Whitecaps Whiteout”) “We look forward to seeing a sea of white and hearing the chants and cheers that will make Empire Field an intimidating environment for all opponents, ” said Whitecaps CEO Paul Barber, who is fond of white jerseys, having been CEO at Tottenham Hostspur before coming to Canada.? White ponchos will be handed out to fans before kickoff on Saturday, and the club plans to hand out, gulp, 5,000 drums to season-ticket holders. Millions of monkeys! Drumming on drums! The 11 is in Vancouver and will have reports from training tomorrow and from Saturday’s historic match. Earplugs? Check.
