Whitecaps do the double over Champions League participants By Charles Posted on February 8, 2011 Comments Off on Whitecaps do the double over Champions League participants 0 696 Share on Facebook Share on Twitter For the second time in three preseason Arizona games, the Vancouver Whitecaps faced CONCACAF Champions League opposition. And, just as the Whitecaps beat Real Salt Lake 2-1, they triumphed over the Columbus Crew by the same score on Tuesday. Both the Crew and RSL are on accelerated training-camp schedules as they face each other in the CONCACAF Champions League quarter-finals; the first leg of their series goes Feb. 22 at what promises to be a very chilly Crew Stadium. Atiba Harris, who played in the 2010 MLS Cup for losing side FC Dallas, opened the scoring in the second half after dancing past Crew trialist keeper Caleb Patterson-Sewell, After the Crew’s Eddie Gaven tied things up with a penalty, Omar Salgado — the No. 1 pick in the 2011 draft — headed home the winner off a cross from Harris. The Whitecaps will head to British Columbia to resume their preseason training after winning two of three games in Arizona. The team returns to the Phoenix area later this month for more friendlies.
