One of Toronto FC’s big mid-season Designated Player signings has been named MLS Player of the Week.

Danny Koevermans scored two second-half goals to give Toronto FC a 2-1 win over the reigning league champions, the Colorado Rapids, on Saturday. Those goals earned him the nod as the Player of the Week from the membership of the North American Soccer Reporters, the league announced Monday.

Koevermans is the second Toronto FC player to take Player of the Week honours; Joao Plata won the award in week eight of the season.

Koevermans has played 511 minutes of MLS action this season, and now has six goals — an average of better than one for every 90 minutes of play. He was brought in along with midfielder/defender Torsten Frings as marquee mid-season signings to bolster Toronto FC.

Even though it’s likely too little, too late to push the team into the playoff picture, the Reds have lost just one of their last seven MLS matches and are arguably enjoying their best run of form in team history.

According to the MLS Players’ Union, Kovermans’ guaranteed compensation for 2011 is $1.4 million. That is an annual average number, which includes bonuses and may need to be pro-rated.

Still, considering all of the Designated Players in MLS who didn’t come close to scoring six MLS goals in their careers (ahem, Mista?), Koevermans is repaying the ownership by doing what he does best — putting the ball in the net.

How The 11 voted: Koevermans. His two goals were classic “fox in the box” strikes, getting onto crosses and making sure he did what he needed to do to get the ball over the line.

The second-place vote when to the Los Angeles Galaxy’s Bryan Jordan. He was solid as the Galaxy kept a clean sheet against the Vancouver Whitecaps — and he set up two goals with exquisite crosses that made you realize that David Beckham isn’t the only guy in Los Angeles who can whip the ball into danger areas.
