Alvaro Saborio
With a hat trick in a 3-0 win over the Portland Timbers, Real Salt Lake striker Alvaro Saborio made things awfully easy for the voting members of the North American Soccer Reporters.

Saborio blew away the field in the MLS Player of the Week vote, earning 11 of the 16 first-place votes cast.

Saborio, one of the best aerial threats in MLS, scored two with his head before cementing his hat trick with a penalty kick against the Timbers. The first goal showed just how lethal Saborio can be in the air. Kyle Beckerman floated a ball in the box, and Saborio, still several yards from goal, snapped his head through it, placing his attempt perfectly into the corner. It was a display of just how strong a player’s neck muscles have to be if he wants to be a striker who can successfully challenge for crosses.

How The 11 voted: Saborio. No choice, really.

Isn’t it funny how Real Salt Lake continue on as one of the elite franchises in the league, despite having no players named to the MLS All-Stars’ First XI? And, Saborio is the first RSL player to be named Player of the Week all season long.

Sure, RSL went through a swoon over the last couple of weeks, but still remains a contender for the Western Conference title. It’s amazing, though, despite getting to the CONCACAF Champions League final last year, how much this team still flies under the radar in MLS.
