Super-agency CAA Sports looks to have learned from last year’s lackadaisical summer season of international friendlies in Toronto. On Monday Major League Soccer announced that Juventus will face Sporting Lisbon at BMO Field on July 23. The match will be part of the Herbalife World Football Challenge, a series of friendlies held throughout North America which includes a July 18 match between the Vancouver Whitecaps and Manchester City.

Canadian soccer fans are waiting on the status of injured midfielder Atiba Hutchinson. A full prognosis on Hutchinson’s injured knee is expected this week. Last week, PSV Eindhoven manager Fred Rutten told the club’s website that it was “a huge disappointment” to see the Canadian player of the year return from the Gold Cup with a knee injury

Yuri Studin, the president of the Greater Toronto Area’s Spartacus Soccer Club, has known Joseph Di Chiara since the boy was in the early stages of elementary school. He remembers young Joseph as not being tough enough to even keep up with his sister on the soccer pitch. Now, Studin is beaming with pride. After coming in as a sub last Saturday in a match against Terek Grozny, Di Chiara, now 19, got his first start Wednesday in the Russian Premier League in the sky blue shirt of Kryliya Sovetov, a 3-0 home loss to Anzhi Makhachkala.

FK Rad confirmed Wednesday that Canadian national-team keeper Milan Borjan has signed a contract with Turkish side Sivasspor. The club announced on its website that Borjan was in Turkey and signed a deal for an undisclosed fee.

But, on a historic night for Canadian soccer — and a historic night for the U-17 World Cup — goalkeeper Quillan Roberts provided one of the most remarkable goals anyone from this country has scored in an international match at any level. His goal gave Canada a 2-2 draw with England, keeping this country’s hopes alive entering Saturday’s Group C finale against Rwanda.

Canadian midfielder Joseph Di Chiara got his first Russian league start Wednesday, as Kryliya Sovetov (Soviet Wings) lost 3-0 to Anzhi Makhachkala. Di Chiara, made his debut Saturday, coming in as a sub and playing 32 minutes against Terek Grozny. But he got the start against Anzhi, which features former Brazil and Real Madrid superstar Roberto Carlos.

Uruguay, far more accustomed to the rareified air than the Canadians, was frustrated through the first half. But Mascia, who has been linked with a move to Chelsea, opened the scoring in a disastrous second half which saw Canada make numerous defensive errors, concede a penalty and lose goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau to a knee injury. When the dust settled, Canada had fallen 3-0.

Keeper Maxime Crepeau is out for two weeks — and likely the rest of the tourney if Canada was to advance out of Group C.

Now that Group A has completed its schedule, the picture for Canada and what it needs to do to qualify out of Group C has become crystal clear. If Canada beats Panama on Tuesday evening — even by a single goal — it will get through to the quarter-finals of the Gold Cup. And, barring a miracle result Monday night from Grenada, a draw will likely see the Canadian side going home early.

Canadian national team keeper Milan Borjan hasn’t yet put a signature on a four-year contract offer from Turkish side Sivasspor. Last week, the Turkish side announced that it had brought Borjan into the fold.
