Brampton’s Hoilett scores twice for Blackburn By Steven Sandor Posted on March 10, 2012 1 0 678 Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Junior Hoilett Junior Hoilett gave Canadian soccer fans two more good reasons to hope that he will finally decide to accept national-team coach Stephen Hart’s standing invitation to join Les Rouges. Hoilett scored on each side of halftime as Blackburn Rovers beat Wolverhampton 2-0 in EPL play Saturday. It was a massive road win for a beleaguered Blackburn side that’s under relegation threat. But it was Hoilett’s second goal that should have Canadian fans — and those in Lancashire, as well — talking for a long time. After taking a pass from Yakubu Aiyegbeni, Hoilett danced laterally across the top of the box, spied an opening in the Wolves’ back line, and rocketed a low, left-footed drive from 25 yards out that went just inside the post. The Brampton, Ont. native has been with Blackburn since he was a teen, working his way up through the youth system. He is out of contract in the summer. In 2009, then-manager Sam Allardyce flew to Brampton to meet with Hoilett’s parents, Ingrid and David Sr., to convince them that their son should remain with Rovers. At that time, they were unhappy that their teenaged son was being loaned out to German sides — Hoilett became a fan favourite at St. Pauli — rather than being given the chance to fight for a spot with Rovers. That all changed when Hoilett got his new Blackburn deal. But, right now, the English rumor mill — which, by nature, is about 95 per cent fantasy and five per cent reality — has Hoilett moving on this summer, no matter if Blackburn survives or not. Still, the sight of Hoilett coming off the wing, wearing the Canadian red jersey, is something all fans in this country would love to see.
