Zaharija in Edmonton, hopes to make jump to NASL By Steven Sandor Posted on July 22, 2013 1 0 811 Share on Facebook Share on Twitter David Zaharija will try and take his game from the Vancouver Metro Soccer League to the North American Soccer League. Zaharija, an attacking midfielder from the VMSL’s Croatia SC side, has arrived in the Alberta capital and will begin a trial with FC Edmonton this week. The Vancouver native is former Whitecaps’ youth player, and spent time with Greek lower-division side Agia Paraskevi. He signed with the Greek side in August of 2010 But, shortly after signing, Zaharija struggled with knee problems that eventually required surgery. While Zaharija is a Vancouverite, Agia Paraskevi had him listed as a Croat on its roster. Coach Colin Miller has said that he is looking to find attacking help for an FC Edmonton side that finished last in the NASL in scoring during the spring season. An attacking midfielder is expected to join the team on contract at the beginning of August, in time for the start of the fall season. Miller has said that he’s also in discussions with MLS sides about the possibility of attackers coming to Edmonton on loan. Miller has said that he does have to work within the parameters of the team’s budget, that he won’t repeat the mistakes the team made in 2011 and 2012, when it consistently overpaid for talent that didn’t pan out.
