Junior Hoilett has a banner night for Rovers By Charles Posted on January 6, 2011 Comments Off on Junior Hoilett has a banner night for Rovers 0 576 Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Junior HoilettA few weeks back, The 11 wondered what the future would hold for Brampton, Ont.-bred midfielder Junior Hoilett after Sam Allardyce was sacked as Rovers’ manager. We may have got our answer on Wednesday. He started and was a major factor in Blackburn’s 3-1 thrashing of Liverpool at Ewood Park, rewarding manager Steve Kean’s faith in the winger. Hoilett’s pass set up Benjani Mwaruwari for a tap-in, Benjani’s second goal of the game, and third goal of the evening for Rovers. It was a beauty; Hoilett got the ball down Liverpool’s left flank, got to the end line, then split defenders Martin Skrtel and Glen Johnson. After he was beaten, Johnson tried to chase down Hoilett from behind, but could only watch as the Canadian slid the ball to Benjani for a finish that. well, you or I could have put in. It was Hoilett’s finest moment as a Premier League player. And, it should earn him more starts for Rovers. Hoilett still hasn’t committed to playing for Canada, stating that he wants to focus on a solidifying his spot at Blackburn. His younger brother, Jaineil, has featured for our U-20 program. Oh, and for those of you out there who still think he’s from Ottawa, let it be known that the mistake — which got life thanks to a mistaken Wikipedia post — is a source of frustration for the Hoilett family. Jaineil and Junior are both from Brampton, thanks very much. And while even the Premier League refers to him as David, he does prefer Junior. (David is also his father’s name).
