On behalf of all the journalists and broadcasters who cover the Impact, we hope he gets blessed with a one-word Brazilian nickname — soon. “Felipe is a player who has established himself as a very good young player in Europe and we believe he is ready to challenge himself in a top league like MLS,” said Impact head coach Jesse Marsch in a release issued by the club. “He is a very versatile, clever, and sharp midfielder and we are extremely pleased to add him to our team for 2012.” Martins scored seven goals over the course of 50 games with Swiss second-division side FC Lugano. Those goals came intermittently over the past three seasons. He’s also played in Italy’s third division. He has scored three times in nine Swiss Cup matches. The Impact now has 23 players under contract for its debut season in MLS. Of those, only Patrice Bernier and Greg Sutton are Canadians. The Impact needs one more Canadian signing in order to comply with MLS rules.
