English veteran Ian Westlake is returning to Montreal.

The Impact announced that the midfielder, who joined the club during the 2011 NASL season, is the 19th player be signed to the side’s roster for the 2012 MLS season. Westlake was named the team’s newcomer of the year at the end of the NASL campaign.

The Impact still have none of the required three Canadian players under contract.

“Ian’s soccer qualities and competitive nature make him a very good fit for our team moving forward,” said Impact head coach Jesse Marsch in a release issued by the club. “I know Ian will come into work everyday and give everything he has. He is a real competitor and an excellent player on the field.”

Westlake made 125 appearances for Ipswich Town and played 47 times for Leeds United when both clubs were outside of the Premiership. Before coming to Montreal, he had spent parts of three season with Wycombe Wanderers.

Westlake is the fourth player who made an appearance in the NASL with the Impact to come over to MLS with the team. In addition, former Fort Lauderdale Strikers Bryan Arguez and Gerson Mayen (who was on loan from Chivas) have been signed by Montreal.
