Welsh national teamer Robert Earnshaw has confirmed that he has signed with Toronto FC and will likely be available for the Reds’ season opener Saturday in Vancouver.

“Breaking news:I have now signed and officially a @Toronto FC player,” Earnshaw tweeted Thursday afternoon. “Season starts this Saturday. Now on the plane flying to Vancouver for the opening game.”

Earnshaw has made over 200 appearances for Cardiff City, and has also enjoyed lengthy spells at West Bromwich Albion, Nottingham Forest and Norwich City. He spent partt of last season on loan to Israeli side Maccabi Tel Aviv, which is home to Canadian defender Oliver Spring and Canadian keeper Tomer Chencinski. Now, on the wrong side of 30, it was clear that Earnshaw was not getting back into the lineup at Cardiff City, which is currently holding down first place in the Championship.

With Danny Koevermans still out as he recovers from a severe knee injury suffered last season, TFC needs more scoring options. And even though Earnshaw has seen very little competitive game action over the past few months, he at least is a player who has scored goals at a fairly regular pace throughout his career.
