Canadian keeper Tomer Chencinski stopped seven shots in his first Swedish Allsvenskan league start, as he helped Orebro SK to a 0-0 draw with Mjallby AIF. Chencinski got the start after veteran keeper Jonas Sandqvist gave up four first-half goals in last week’s season opening loss to Atvidabergs FF.

And, Chencinski sent a strong message to his club and its supporters, posting the clean sheet in his first start in Sweden’s top flight. Chencinski signed with Orebro after he enjoyed a breakthrough season in 2011 with Finnish first division side VPS, where he started as the No. 2 keeper, fought his way to the No. 1 job and didn’t look back for the rest of the season.

Chencinski was part of Toronto FC’s opening-day roster in the 2007 expansion season, but didn’t see any time playing behind Greg Sutton. But he never gave up his dream, and played in Harrisburg, where he teamed with current FC Edmonton midfielder Dominic Oppong, and then traveled to Moldova before eventually getting his chance in Scandinavia.

Now, Canadian fans can hope that Chencinski’s season in Sweden unfurls as it did in Finland — that he started the season as the No. 2 and works his way to No. 1, and doesn’t look back. And, if Chencinski’s form continues in Sweden as it did in Finland, will he receive a call from national-team coach Stephen Hart?

“I haven’t got a call but my agent has been in contact with (national coach) Stephen Hart,” Chencinski told The 11 when he went on trial with Orebro. “I would love to get a call into the national team. I was born in Israel, but it was Canada that gave me the opportunity. I consider this my country.”
