For Olivier Occean, it was a case of try, try again.

It took until well into the second half for March’s Canadian Soccer Association male player of the month to get on the scoresheet, as SpVgg Greuther Furth reclaimed top spot in the Bundesliga 2. Thursday with a 3-0 triumph over Energie Cottbus.

Occean had a penalty kick saved and had a headed effort crash off the bar against 10-man Cottbus before he finally slotted home a goal in the 75th minute to extend Furth’s lead to 2-0. The goal was the 17th on the season for Occean. Cottbus went down to 10 men at the 27-minute mark, and it led to the penalty kick that Occean failed to convert.

With the win, SpVgg goes two points clear of Eintracht Frankfurt in the second division, though Frankfurt has a game in hand.

SpVgg Greuther Furth’s next game comes in five days, when it will face Eintracht Braunschweig, which features Canadian forward Randy Edwini-Bonsu.

I watched some of this game on Eurosport2 and was mildly impressed by OO. He is often in the right place at the right time and he gets a lot of good chances. That said though, his ball distribution wasn’t that smooth. He gave up the ball on a few occasions with bad passes, but that being said, his teammates sure knew how to find him.

Unusual how he can turn out game in game out for Furth but hasn’t quite found his footing with the CanMNT. Any theories on that Steve?

I think you just get a run of games where you are comfortable and know your teammates. It just clicks. He doesn’t have that level of comfort playing with the national team. Some guys don’t do as well when they have to walk in and play with new teammates after just two days of training.
