Kyle Porter has returned to the NASL.

The Atlanta Silverbacks announced Wednesday that they have signed the Canadian international. Porter will be reunited with fellow Canadian former FC Edmonton teammate Dominic Oppong, who signed with the Silverbacks last month.

Porter spent the previous two seasons with the DC United organization, but spent much of 2014 with the MLS team’s USL affiliate in Richmond. He was released at the end of the season.

Before that, he spent two seasons with FC Edmonton, scoring a total of 12 goals; the Eddies offered him a new contract, but he chose to pursue a what turned into a successful trial with DC United and the Eddies pulled the offer off the table.

“In all honesty, I think Kyle is one of the most exciting additions that we’ve added to the group this offseason,” said Silverbacks coach Gary Smith in a release issued by the club. “He’s quick, he’s powerful and he is a very talented player. Individually, he’s capable of producing excellence on the ball in 1-versus-1 situations and he has an extraordinary eye for goal at this level.”

You misread the story. Edmonton pulled the deal (to resign) two years ago when Kyle went on trial with DC. I have never heard a return to Edmonton was a possibility.

He must have thought he had a shot at the MLS but realistically he was only fooling himself..Fath’s are known for paying above NASL standards meaning he walked away from most likely a much better deal than what Atlanta offered him….and a club with a shaky future..not very smart

Why is that? He tried out for DC United and got a contract. He actually played a lot for them in his first season. If there was any kind of free agency in MLS (not THE MLS, come on, it’s not that hard!), he could have gone on to get signed by another team. Now his rights are still with DC, which means other clubs would have to bring something to the table for him (next to the international roster slot that is).

Playing a full year for Atlanta will get him back in the picture, especially if he does well there.
