The Canadian midfielder came on as a 67th-minute sub as his new Swiss team, BSC Young Boys, beat Sion 1-0 in Sunday in Swiss league action. For Simpson, the appearance on the pitch ended an odyssey that began in March. The B.C. native signed with BSC in mid-January, a deal that runs till June of 2015. Simpson and his agent made themselves free agents after ending a contract with Turkish side Manisaspor, claiming just grounds because the Turkish club has missed payments to the Canadian. Simpson’s agent later revealed that he and his client had notified FIFA in August about the alleged missed payments. Through all of this, Simpson excelled for the Canadian national team during its first phase of World Cup qualifying and through the first half of the Turkish league. Manisaspor threatened legal action against Simpson. But, after Simpson signed with BSC, he couldn’t get into games. He didn’t play in three friendlies held during the Swiss league’s winter break. He didn’t play in last week’s Swiss league win over Servette. And, after weeks of silence, Simpson was listed on BSC’s injury report as “questionable” ahead of the Sion match. The reason? Not an injury, but “eligibility” issues. But, those paperwork issue have finally been resolved. Now Simpson can hopefully focus 100 per cent of his energy on what he does best — playing football.
