Canadian striker Olivier Occean’s continued his red-hot pace since the German pro ranks returned from the winter break.

Just days after his highlight-reel goal was the difference in a German Cup win over TSV Hoffenheim, Occean led his SpVgg Greuther Furth team back to the top of the Bundesliga 2. table with a 5-1 thrashing of SC Paderborn.

Occean scored one and did the grunt work in setting up strike partner Gerald Asamoah and got one himself in the rout.

Occean’s club entered the game in fourth place in the Bundlesliga 2. table, while SC Paderborn was in third in the tightly packed table. But, after surrendering the first goal, SpVgg Greuther Furth was rampant, and padded the goal difference.

Late in the first half, Occean beat three Paderborn defenders and lofted a cross for Asamoah to direct home.

Asamoah, the 33-year-old former Schalke star, was just brought into the SpVgg Greuther Furth fold in order to strengthen the squad for a promotion push.

Early in the second half, Occean’s goal made the score 4-1 and basically ended the proceedings.

But Occean could have had more. Paderborn goalkeeper Lukas Kruse came up big on two separate occasions in Occean chances that could have made the rout all the more emphatic, including a header off a corner.?
Occean now has 11 goals on the season.

But, more importantly, his club made an important statement of intent on Sunday — and, for Occean, the chance to play in the Bundesliga in 2012-13 would be even sweeter than the goals he’s scoring right now.
