The Fury has gone with the shield.

The club unveiled its official logo Saturday at Ottawa’s Berryman Pub during the halftime ceremonies of the UEFA Champions League final. It was one of three logos designed in conjunction with U.S.-based Downstream Design and Technology; the three logos were put unveiled to the public in April, and fans were invited to submit their choices and comments. In the end, the franchise chose the black shield with the red flame. But some minor tweaks were made to the design that was originally shown to the public.

“The fan’s input has been invaluable and we responded to their comments,” said Ottawa Fury FC President John Pugh in a release issued by the club. “We are pleased with the logo as the centerpiece of our re-branding.”

The club begins play in the NASL in 2014. Marc Dos Santos was named the club’s first head coach earlier this week.

At least they didn’t go with the “word” logo, it was the worst one. The fixation in soccer with shields is silly, and shows an ignorance of heraldry – if you’re writing words, put them in an annulet (circle) around your central design element, not on a shield.

Unfortunately, as long as they are determined to play in a CFL stadium they are doomed to fail.

Even though it’s not completely bogus, I much more appreciate their current PDL-logo. It’s so retro. Hopefully in a couple of years down the road they’re gonna look back and say, hey let’s try that one again.

But they’re getting started up there, can’t wait to see who they’ll sign and how they scout players.
