Georget, Baggott named CIS Players of the Year By Steven Sandor Posted on November 8, 2012 1 0 1,017 Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Samuel Georget The legend of Samuel Georget continues to grow. The French midfielder was named the CIS Men’s Player of the Year at the awards banquet in Quebec City Wednesday night. The Laval midfielder scored six times and added six assists in 12 games, but was also recognized for how he dominates the middle of the park, game in, game out. Georget was named player of the match three times this season for Laval, which finished the RSEQ campaign with a 9-0-3 record. He was named a Canadian first-team all-star for the third time. Georget raised his profile in the national men’s club final back on Thanksgiving day. He scored an audacious 20-yard goal and set up two more as his Royal-Select Beauport side stunned heavily favoured Edmonton Scottish in the final; the teams finished the game tied 3-3 and Beauport took the match in kicks. “When Samuel Georget has a good game, the team has a good game,” said Laval head coach Samir Ghrib in a release issued by CIS. “He is an exceptional person, student and athlete. His work ethic is remarkable and he is a stellar student with a perfect GPA. On the pitch, he’s an amazing player at both ends of the field. I can’t thank him enough for all he’s done for the Rouge et Or program.” Georget has a perfect 4.33 grade point average last year as he works through Laval’s psycho-pedagogy program. Niko Saler, the former FC Edmonton left back, was named the CIS Rookie of the Year for his stellar work down the left side for the University of Alberta. Meanwhile, in Victoria, Ottawa’s Gillian Baggott was named the women’s Player of the Year. From the defensive position, Baggott scored six times, and marshaled a back line that was the country’s best defence. The Gee Gees allowed just one goal in 12 games, and is the odds-on favourite to win the women’s title. Like Georget, Baggott also excelled outside of her collegiate program. She was part of the Ottawa Fury team that won the W-League title in 2012.
