Former TFC prospect Matt Gold makes the move to NASL By Steven Sandor Posted on February 2, 2012 Comments Off on Former TFC prospect Matt Gold makes the move to NASL 0 681 Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Former Toronto FC prospect Matt Gold has found a new home — at home. The San Antonio, Tex, native, who spent the 2011 season with the Reds and was released at the end of the campaign, was signed by the NASL expansion side San Antonio Scorpions on Thursday. Gold was taken in the third round of the 2011 SuperDraft — a place where most players selected never make it out of their first MLS training camps — and went on to make three MLS appearances as Red, all of them in a subsitute’s role. Matt Gold San Antonio signed four players Thursday, and the biggest name was Pablo Campos. The Brazil-born forward was the lightning to Etienne Barbara’s thunder for the Carolina RailHawks last season. Campos scored 15 goals last year, while Barbara, the league MVP, had 20. But, in the second half of the season and through the playoffs, Campos was the more dangerous of the two players. And, without Barbara as his strike partner, it will be interesting to see how Campos does (and vice versa). Still, it’s a major signing for San Antonio and an indication that this club, like Edmonton last year, doesn’t want to be a doormat of an expansion team. Gold and Campos will join Canadian Kevin Harmse; the former Whitecap was one of the first two players ever added to the San Antonio roster.
