FCE trialist Torindo traveled from Yellowknife to Zimbabwe to play soccer

When someone contacts a soccer club about a potential trial, it is usually the player or his agent.

But in the case of Dillon Torindo, it was his minister. The call came from Yellowknife — a place the Zimbabwe native calls home most of the year. He said that Torindo had a lot of talent and was looking for a club.

Torindo’s credentials had checked out. FCE Assistant coach Jeff Paulus found out that Torindo had impressed the Portland Timbers while on trial there, but the team didn’t have room to take on an import who’s a project player. Paulus also found out that Torindo goes back to Zimbabwe for a few months out of the year to play in that country’s first division.

And, Paulus saw a video of Torindo playing futsal, and was impressed with the player’s touch in close quarters. And that’s especially impressive when you consider that Torindo is six-foot-four on a wide frame. He looks more like an Eskimo than an Eddie.

Torindo hasn’t been sent home. He’s impressed Paulus so far.

“He’s played in the Zimbabwe top flight, and that league is very athletic, very physical,” said Paulus. “We’ve liked what we’ve seen so far, and he fits in with what we want to do here as a club.”
