Donovan’s four-assist match earns him MLS POTW honour By Steven Sandor Posted on August 13, 2012 Comments Off on Donovan’s four-assist match earns him MLS POTW honour 0 707 Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Landon Donovan PHOTO: NOELLE NOBLE Los Angeles Galaxy forward Landon Donovan became just the fourth player in MLS history to register four assists in a match, putting him in a select company of players that includes Canadian Dwayne De Rosario. Donovan’s performance, figuring in on all of the goals in a 4-0 win over Chivas USA in a Battle of Los Angeles on Sunday night, made him the shoo-in choice for MLS Player of the Week. Donovan got 14 of the 17 first-place votes cast by the members of the North American Soccer Reporters. So, it wasn’t close How The 11 voted: Donovan. Had the Galaxy not been able to beat Chivas on Sunday, there surely would have been some question about the club deciding to allow David Beckham to skip yet another match, this time to attend the Olympics’ closing ceremonies. But, Donovan was dominant and was the easy choice. But, instead, the Galaxy dominated, closing to within a point of the Whitecaps and Seattle Sounders. The battle for the third, fourth and fifth spots in the West will likely go down to the wire. (The Sounders have 37 points in 23 matches; Whitecaps 37 out of 24; and the Galaxy 36 out of 25). It’s huge, as third place gets a first-round bye, while No. 4 and No. 5 face off in a wild-card match, with No. 5 having to go on the road.
