Tyrone Downes: Set up York’s game-winning goal
York and McMaster continue to be on a collision course for the OUA championship. York, ranked No. 1 in the CIS, and the No. 4-ranked Marauders both won their quarter-final match-ups this past weekend. York hosts the OUA final four next weekend, and the Lions and Marauders are the favourites to meet in the final. In their last regular-season meeting, McMaster fought back to draw York 1-1 in Toronto, and actually had more chances on goal than the No. 1-ranked Lions. York continued its undefeated season with a 1-0 quarter-final win over Laurier, a Shaun MacDonald scored after a corner was scrambled in the penalty area. Tyrone Downes kept the attack alive at the far post, and pushed the ball to the centre of goal where MacDonald was able to finish the chance. York will now meet Carleton in the Nov. 3 semifinal. McMaster will meet Queen’s in the other semifinal, after the Marauders defeated Guelph 2-0 in their quarter-final match-up. David Serafini scored on a penalty, then sub Gersi Xhuti wrapped up the win with a second-half insurance goal. ALBERTA HOSTS: The University of Alberta clinched the Canada West Prairie Division this past weekend — and with it, the right to host the conference finals. Under the new playoff format, the best six teams in Canada West will head to the winner of the Prairie Division for a championship tournament next week. And, with 4-1 and 2-1 wins over their provincial rivals from the University of Calgary, the Golden Bears salted away the title and got the hosting rights. Under the new format, the final-six hosting duties will flip back between the Prairie and Pacific Conference winners. Because this year is the Prairie Conference’s turn, the No. 2 ranked UBC Thunderbirds will actually have to try and win the title on the road in Edmonton, even though they have shown they are the class of Canada West, so far at least. Alberta got goals from Jonah Feil, Marcus Johnstone, Christopher Roberts, and Cameron Schmidt in Saturday’s win over Calgary. Scott Gilroy and Glynndon Dobson scored in Sunday’s 2-1 triumph. The Canada West tourney opens on Nov. 1 at Foote Field. RELATED: CIS wrap: York rolls, Calgary sets up U of A showdown (CLICK) CIS: York, McMaster draw in battle of Ontario heavyweights (CLICK)
