The X-Men are coming to Edmonton.

No, it’s not Wolverine, Cyclops or Nightcrawler, but two members of the St. Francis Xavier University X-Men, who have confirmed that they will be at FC Edmonton’s combine Nov. 28-30 at Commonwealth Stadium’s fitness centre.

Canadian Max Maund and Czech-born Michael Marousek are the fifth and sixth players confirmed for the combine.

Maund, from Courtenay, B.C., is a pure athlete. The defender was named to the AUS first-team all-star squad this past season. Not only did he star for St. F-X’s soccer program, but he was also an integral part of the school’s track program. He won gold in the 300 metres at the Atlantic championships last year. Maund is a former member of the Whitecaps developmental arm and played nine games in 2012 for the Thunder Bay Chill of the PDL.

Marousek, born in Jihlava, Czech Republic, is an associate coach with St. F-X. In his five years playing for the X-Men, he became the school’s all-time leading scorer, with 43 goals, He’s a two-time all-Canadian and was named the AUS conference’s most valuable player in 2010.

FC Edmonton has enjoyed some success in mining CIS for talent, from Trinity Western’s Paul Hamilton — who was named to the NASL Best XI in 2012 — to striker Paul Craig, who came from the University of Saskatchewan.
