Thierry Henry named MLS Player of the Week

Through the first two weeks of the season, the MLS players of the week weren’t exactly household names — Portland’s Kalif Alhassan and Seattle’s David Estrada.

Well, no such worries with the current edition of the Player of the Week. New York Red Bull Thierry Henry, the brightest soccer star in the biggest media market in MLS, got the POTW nod after the votes from the North American Soccer Reporters were counted.

Henry and teammate Kenny Cooper each scored twice Sunday as the Red Bulls trounced the Colorado Rapids 4-1. But Henry gets the nod as, not only did he score twice, but he was the provider of Cooper’s first goal with a wonderful through ball that pierced the Rapids’ defence.

How The 11 voted: Henry. The French striker may be well into his 30s, but he proved he is nowhere close to being ready for retirement during his loan spell with Arsenal, where he scored game winners in FA Cup action against Leeds and in the league at Sunderland. Against Colorado which, ironically, is affiliated with Arsenal through the ownership of gajillionaire Stan Kroenke, Henry showed that he still has class in abundance.

Chris Wondolowski got the second-place vote as he scored twice for the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday. But, he didn’t have quite as dominating a performance as Henry — and Wondolowski did it against a TFC back line which has been the worst in MLS so far this young season.

Had Wondolowski beat Henry for the award, that would have meant that, in both of its games this season, TFC had allowed an opposing player to put up POTW-worthy numbers. Estrada got the nod in week two (TFC had a bye for week one of the season) for scoring a hat trick against the Reds.

Yep, TFC is the worst defense until proven otherwise. I’ve seen Mo Johnson’s teams, Preki’s teams, and Winter’s teams. The most competitive teams by far were Preki’s. MLSE mgmt oversold that season and hung him out to dry when they fell short, instead of standing by him, setting the team back years. Winter is still trying to recover.
