In hockey, it’s called a natural hat trick. That is, three goals are scored all in a row by one player. One. Two. Three. With no one else getting a goal in between.

Well, that’s it. With the NASL regular season coming to a close this past weekend, we’re now at the final instalment of the Power Rankings for 2017.

Now, to USL. We stopped ranking minutes last week when the league’s regular season came to a halt. But, in the opening round of the playoffs, Canadian (and former TFC Academy) goalkeeper Darrin MacLeod shone for Swope Park Rangers.

But, Edmonton, despite the logistical problems its soccer clubs and coaches face, still manages to punch above its weight when it comes to producing talent.

It just wouldn't be a Canadian national-team roster announcement if we didn't focus more on who isn't on the team than who was on the list.

“It was, obviously, disappointing on how the draft worked out but, luckily, I had my dad with me,” Shome said. “And we talked about how it doesn’t matter where you’re picked, it’s about making an impression once you get to camp. So, really, this will be motivation for me.”

But, despite Reid being a standout scorer in League1 Ontario and Shome being the only player in the draft class with significant professional experience — with 26 NASL games played — they both fell to the late stages of the second round of Friday’s SuperDraft.

The league announced that it and now-former commissioner Bill Peterson had parted ways. A release put out by the league indicated it was an amicable split.

In what is a unique deal, FC Edmonton has received a transfer fee from MLS for the rights to teenage standout Shamit Shome.

The Eddies will play in the post-season. And they haven’t given up the chase of the New York Cosmos for the NASL's No. 1 seed.
