Tyson Wahl began the season as a starter on the Montreal Impact’s backline. But, with the Impact continuing to shore up its league-worst defence, Wahl was deemed expendable.

The MLS veteran defender was traded to the Colorado Rapids Friday for an international roster spot that can be used in… 2014.

“Although it wasn’t always easy for him during his stay, he remained a true professional from the first day,” said Impact sporting director Nick De Santis in a release issued by the club. “We want to thank him for his services and wish him the best in Colorado.”

With the additions of Alessandro Nesta and Swiss fullback Dennis Iapichino, there was no room at the inn for an American defender who is no longer seeing playing time. Wahl made 11 starts this season, most of them coming earlier in the year.

He was acquired from Seattle for allocation money before the start of the 2012 season.

In the last week, the Impact have traded forward Justin Braun and Wahl, and loaned out midfielder Bryan Arguez to FC Edmonton — but FCE confirmed there is a “subject-to” clause in the deal that would give the Eddies the chance to acquire Arguez outright at the end of the four-month spell.
