Montreal Impact coach Jesse Marsch now has the keys to his new Ferrari.

The Impact announced Thursday what pretty well everyone who follows the club was expecting to hear, that it has come to an agreement with Italian defender Matteo Ferrari, who has been in camp with the club since the middle of February.

Ferrari has 11 caps for Italy. He played the last two seasons with Besiktas.

“I’m very happy for this opportunity to play an important role with the Impact in its inaugural season,” said Ferrari. “I hope to help this team progress and succeed in its first campaign in MLS. I’ve only been here a short time, but I’m happy with the organization. The coaches and the players have been great to me.”

“We are extremely pleased to add a player of this quality to our team,” said Impact head coach Jesse Marsch. “He has already fit into our group in a very good way and we believe that his experience and leadership make us stronger.”

Ferrari has spent the last two seasons with Besiktas. The Turkish side paid Genoa a six-million-Euro transfer fee to acquire the defender, who has played over 200 Serie A games.

When Montreal Impact owner Joey Saputo went to Europe on a player-finding mission for the club, Ferrari wasn’t even on his radar. But a surprise meeting paved the way for the MLS trial.
