There were a couple of storylines of note for Canadian soccer fans from Wednesday’s MLS All-Star Game from Chester, Pa. While American Eddie Johnson was the hero for his late goal that gave the MLS a 3-2 win over Chelsea, a look at MLSSoccer.com’s three standout performers (CLICK HERE) saw Vancouver Whitecap Jay Demerit rated as the game’s second-best player for a solid 90-minute performance. And Canada’s Dwayne De Rosario was No. 3 on the list for a threatening full game’s work, which included a perfect set-up on a the 2-2 goal from D.C. United teammate Chris Pontius. For De Rosario, it was just another ho-hum standout performance at an All-Star Game. Two years ago, he scored against Manchester United. In 2008, at BMO Field, he hit the winning penalty kick as the All-Star beat West Ham. And, in 2006, he scored the winner against Chelsea in the Chicago ‘burbs. Now, for Whitecaps fans, there is sure top be some chat about DeMerit getting a full 90, just two days ahead of a key match against Real Salt Lake in the thin Rocky Mountain air. Likely, if Friday’s game is played anywhere near sea level, it’s not as big an issue. Bt the fact that Salt Lake City is at altitude can really play into if DeMerit will be fit or not to go 90 against RSL. RSL midfielder Kyle Beckerman played just 34 minutes. The schedulemaker has been cruel to Vancouver in this regard, scheduling the Whitecaps to play a Friday night game on the road; and when Sporting Kansas City’s Aurelien Collin had to leave the game in the first half with a head injury, DeMerit was forced to become the veteran anchor of the backline, not a part-time all-star.
