Confirmed: Torn ACL finishes Koevermans’ season By Steven Sandor Posted on July 16, 2012 Comments Off on Confirmed: Torn ACL finishes Koevermans’ season 0 783 Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Toronto FC confirmed Monday that leading scorer Danny Koevermans will miss the rest of the 2012 season with an ACL tear in his left knee. The knee will require surgery — but the team said no date has yet been set for the Dutch striker to go under the knife. Koevermans fell under the challenge of New England’s A.J. Soares on Saturday, and needed to be stretchered off the field. TFC fans had been bracing for the worst news possible; after the New England match, coach Paul Mariner was clear that the injury was bad — and was already speaking about how other players need to step up to fill the void left by Koeverman’s absence. Under MLS rules, teams are allowed to replace the roster position, but not the salary. Koevermans’ US$335,000 cap hit remains intact, but his roster spot can be replaced with another international player, as long as the Reds do not go over the cap. But TFC has freed up some cap space with recent moves; and the team could change its tack from searching for a high-profile centre back to a striker who can provide some goals. Koevermans has eight goals and one assist this year. TFC has 22 goals in total.
