And, really, why did MLS even need to have an MVP vote in 2012? In a year when San Jose Earthquakes’ star forward Chris Wondolowski tied a league record with 27 goals in a season, when he led a team that missed the playoffs in 2011 to the Supporters’ Shield in 2012, was there really any choice? It would be the most punk of punk-rock voters who would decide to raise a middle finger to the establishment and not vote for Wondo. To call the vote a landslide would actually be an understatement. He got: •91.23 per cent of the votes from the clubs •96.97 per cent of the media vote •70.83 per cent of the player vote Yes, there were a small number of people who voted for other players, but put that down to being that guy who finds the one Slayer song in the jukebox at the bar and then invests a toonie so “South of Heaven” plays a few times in succession. (OK, I was that guy… but you get the point).
