Greg Smith: Scored for UBC against the Huskies
After their showdown Saturday in Edmonton ended in a 2-2 draw, both the University of Alberta and University of British Columbia consolidated their positions at the tops of their respective Canada West divisions with Sunday victories. And, ironicially, both schools did each other massive favours with those Sunday wins. UBC continued its prairie road trip with a stop in Saskatoon Sunday, and shut out the Saskatchewan Huskies 2-0. Meanwhile, Alberta hosted Trinity Western, and beat the Spartans 2-1. TWU is pursuing UBC in the Pacific Division; Saskatchewan is chasing Alberta in the Prairie division. So, after the dust settled on Sunday, Alberta jumped to a seven-point lead over Saskatchewan and Calgary in the Prairie Conference, while the No. 2 nationally ranked T-Birds went five up on TWU. In Edmonton, it was the same two goal scorers that found the net against UBC who did the damage against Trinity Western. Jonah Feil and Zenon Markevych staked the Golden Bears to a 2-0 lead before Spartan Jarvis Ambaka got a consolation marker late in the match to make the scoreline more respectable. In Saskatoon, Steve Johnson and Greg Smith scored for the T-Birds, who recovered from Saturday’s sluggish defensive effort, which saw Alberta dominate on aerial battles, and allowed Saskatchewan just two shots on goal. Despite postive weekend for No. 2 UBC and No. 4 Alberta, neither will likely make a move to usurp the No. 1 spot from York. Adrian Pena scored three times over the course of a couple of Lions wins, a 2-0 triumph in midweek over UOIT and then a 3-2 win over Brock on Sunday. York has won 12 of its 13 OUA matches, the only blemish being a 1-1 tie with Western. But, there will be plenty of voices from out west that will point out that Canada West, as the power conference in the country, forces UBC and Alberta to play much tougher schedules.
