Maybe the thing a team doesn’t want is to be ranked No. 1 in the CIS poll. Two weekends ago, UBC, which began the season as the No. 1, suffered a shock loss to the University of the Fraser Valley. That loss helped propel York to No. 1. And what did the Lions do to celebrate their vault to the top? Lose, of course. On Friday, York lost its first OUA regular-season match in 25 outings, a 1-0 decision to McMaster. Paterson Farrell got the winner in the 51st minute, chasing down and burying the rebound from his own initial shot. York rebounded Sunday with a 4-0 triumph over UOIT, highlighted by goals from Mark-Anthony Kaye and former TFC Academy prospect Jonathan Lao. Kaye and Lao have goals each through five games. But, the loss to McMaster will surely damage York’s chances of remaining No. 1. UBC rebounds The reigning national champs fell from the No. 1 perch with that shock loss to Fraser Valley, but this past weekend, the University of British Columbia tried to set things right. With 5-1 and 6-1 wins over Trinity Western, UBC sent a clear message to the rest of Canada West: That the 1-0 loss to Fraser Vallley was a fluke. Reynold Stewart scored twice in Sunday’s 6-1 win. “This weekend represents two quality performances and a good bounce back from last week’s setback,” said UBC head coach Mike Mosher in a release issued by the Thunderbirds. “That was more of a UBC soccer performance. I feel for Trinity Western as they have suffered from numerous injuries, but we went and took care of business as we needed to.” Stewart also scored in Friday’s 5-1 win, which was UBC’s homecoming game. Tilted field score of the week On the women’s side, there was one result from this past weekend’s action that stuck out like a sore thumb. University of Calgary 11, University of Winnipeg 0. The Dinos are now 3-0-1 on the year, and may be the surprise team in Canadian women’s soccer this season. How’s this for a feat? The Dinos had a player score a hat trick — in each half, that is. Ann Stranges netted three goals in the first half that saw Calgary build an 8-0 lead, while Amy Hockings scored three in the second half.
