There will be Canadian content on NASL’s Caribbean club this season. The Puerto Rico Islanders have confirmed that they have inked Ottawa native Edson Edward to a deal.

The Ottawa Fury, Edward’s old PDL club, also announced that its alumnus is off to the NASL.

Edward becomes the second Ottawa Fury alum to join NASL this season, as Kenny Caceros, who last played for Capital City FC of the CSL, joined FC Edmonton for the 2012 campaign.
Edward had been with FC Dallas for the previous two seasons before being released. But, during his time there, he couldn’t get away from the reserve squad. He made just one MLS match appearance in two seasons, and that came as a sub. His MLS minutes over two seasons? Five.

This deal should give the Canadian defender a chance to get some playing time with one of the second division’s elite clubs.

And, as Ottawa prepares to join NASL as an expansion team, it’s interesting for their fans to note that a couple of local talents are cutting their teeth in the second division.
