Daniel Haber wasn’t named to coach Benito Floro’s squad for Canada’s Aug. 15 friendly against Australia.

Maybe he’s out to prove a point. For the second league game in a row, Haber has scored the match-winning goal. On Monday, he scored in the 73rd minute to give Apollon Limassol a 1-0 lead over Doxa in Cyprus League action. Apollon would go on to win the game 2-0.

“The ball was loose in the box and I beat my man to bury the chance,” Haber told The 11. “Felt great to score a second goal and continue to earn my manager’s trust. Also had the assist on the second goal.”

The Toronto native scored the winner last weekend, a 36th-minute strike in a 2-1 win over Alki.

Haber is getting the chance to play domestically as Apollon has to rotate its squad regularly as it negotiates the Europa League group stages. Haber was on the subs’ bench as Apollon went to Poland last week and upset Legia Warszawa, 1-0. Apollon opened Group J play with a 2-1 loss at home to Trabzonspor.

Haber spent part of last year at Maccabi Haifa after decided to leave Cornell University early. But, he wanted the chance for more playing time, and he felt that Limassol would offer the best fit.

Wow he doesn’t need much time to score goals, does he? And the best thing about it is that Limassol is a fairly decent club. Don’t know if they can be champions, but they’re a top of the league-club and have had a nice start of the season. Chances are high that Apollon can finish in the top-three of Cyprus, which is quite a good level.

Finally a young Canadian striker performing in a team at the top of a league, hope he can continue this form and attrack some attention from better leagues.
