Canada sets up rematch with France

The Canadian women’s team now has another Olympic rematch on its schedule. On Monday, the Canadian Soccer Association announced the women’s team will face France April 4 in Nice, three days before it is scheduled to play England in Rotherham. These matches will take place after March’s Cyprus Cup. The match against France will be a rematch of the Olympic bronze medal match, which saw the French outplay and outshoot the Canadian side but, thanks to a mix of defensive determination and luck on Canada’s part, not be able to score. And, on a late scramble in the French penalty area, Diana Matheson bundled home to give Canada the 1-0 win and the bronze. Canada has already announced a June 2 friendly at home to the United States, who controversially beat Canada 4-3 in the Olympic semifinal. That June friendly will take place in Toronto. The NWSL schedule begins April 13. With friendlies on April 4 and 7 on European soil, the Canadian women who play in the league will have little time to get back to American soil and ready themselves for league play.
