Four Canadian teens who won gold with the senior women’s squad at the 2011 Pan Am Games have got the call for the Canadian U-20 team. Ottawa Fury product Rachelle Beanlands, reigning U-20 player of the year Amelia Pietrangelo, Hamilton FC’s Diamond Simpson and Marquette University’s Vanessa Legault-Cordisco got to experience life with the senior team at the Pan Ams and earned gold medals, to boot. Now, they will be expected to be leaders on the U-20 squad, as they are part of the 22-player roster who will begin preparations for the CONCACAF Women’s U-20 Championship. Beanlands earned her first ever clean sheet for the senior side during the Pan Am Games, as she helped Canada nurse its way through a tense 1-0 win over Argentina. The women will gather Feb. 13 for an extended training camp under new coach Andrew Olivieri — and the team will head to Panama two weeks later for the CONCACAF tourney. “It will be exciting to see the future of our women’s program as we work towards the CONCACAF Women’s Under-20 Championship,” said Olivieri in a release issued by the Canadian Soccer Association. “This is the type of highly competitive environment in which our players must perform if they want to make regular appearances with the national A team.” Meanwhile, Canadian women’s U-17 coach Bryan Rosenfeld announced his roster for Saturday’s friendly against Germany that will kick off in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The U-17 program will compete in the CONCACAF Championships in Guatemala this May, looking to earn a berth in the U-17 World Cup.
