Still celebrating his renegotiated contract with the Whitecaps, Camilo scored Vancouver’s first goal of the preseason just 35 seconds into the new campaign. Alas, the Whitecaps couldn’t score again for the next 120 minutes, and settled for a draw in an extended game with the Seattle Sounders in Arizona. Camilo scored almost immediately after the opening kickoff, set up by Atiba Harris. Harris has been almost a forgotten factor with the Whitecaps, even though he’s re-signed for the 2012 season. He enjoyed a great start to the 2011 season, with two goals and three assists through his first five starts but was sidelined by knee trouble. Now, with Camilo, Designated Player Eric Hassli and Sebastien Le Toux as part of the attack, Harris is rarely mentioned. Servando Carrasco scored the equalizer two minutes into the second half. The teams played two 45-minute halves and then tacked on 30 minutes of extra time — which was planned whether the score was tied or not — in order to give Whitecaps’ coach Martin Rennie and Sounders’ boss Sigi Schmid the chance to look at as many players as possible. Le Toux and Hassli started the game up front, while Harris and Camilo got into attacking midfield roles. The second half saw Davide Chiumiento and 2011 first overall SuperDraft pick Omar Salgado go up top. It took until the extra-time period for Rennie to put a Canadian player on the field for the Whitecaps, when Russell Teibert entered the game. Reiging Canadian U-17 player of the year Bryce Alderson got into the match at the 105-minute mark. Trialist Floyd Franks, yet another Carolina RailHawks refugee brought into the Whitecaps fold, got an extended look, playing both the second half and half of the 30-minute period of extra time. If Franks, a trialist, would make the team, it might add a little spice to the Whitecaps’ Amway Canadian Championship semifinal with FC Edmonton. Last season, the Railhawks and FCE had several altercations — and Franks was a major part of those melees. Already, with so many ex-RailHawks on the Whitecaps’ roster (and Rennie as coach), there is an air of familiarity between the two teams.
