Nana Attakora’s attempt to land a job in Germany wasn’t successful. Second-division side FC Union Berlin announced Wednesday that the Canadian defender’s trial had ended and that Attakora would not stay with the team.

Attakora played a half in a 3-0 loss to Spanish lower-division side Cadiz CF, then played the full 90 in a 4-2 loss to Cadiz’s third-division neighbour, San Fernando CD. The German side was in Spain, prepping for the second half of the season.

The German leagues are currently on their winter break.

Attakora had hoped to break in during the transfer window. After being regarded as Toronto FC’s best defensive prospect, Attakora has a serious reversal of fortune in 2011. After suffering through some personal issues, Attakora slid deep down the Toronto FC depth chart. He couldn’t get into the team even though coach Aron Winter’s side was on pace to give up the most goals in MLS (which it did). Winter claimed that Attakora wanted to be traded. When Adrian Cann went down with a season ending knee injury, Winter said he called on Attakora to return to the lineup, but the defender wasn’t ready to play.

“Then I said to him when Adrian Cann got injured, he knew he should play,” Winter told The 11‘s Aman Dhanoa in 2011. “And at that period he wanted to be traded also. But then if you’re not happy and that you know the day before you’re going to play, you come in and asked to be traded it says enough — that you were not happy.”

Attakora was deal to San Jose, but didn’t settle well there. At the end of the year, he was made available in the expansion draft. But, despite a Canadian passport and a previous history of good defensive play, the Montreal Impact didn’t bite.

Attakora did get a call to join the national team for Canada’s most recent two World Cup qualifiers.
