Stefan Frei can now say he has gone from the Reds to the Reds.

Toronto FC announced Sunday that the Swiss goalkeeper will train with Liverpool FC until Dec. 18.

“This is a great opportunity for Stefan and we were happy to give him permission to train with a historic club like Liverpool,” said Toronto FC Head Coach and Technical Director Aron Winter in a release issued by the club. “He has emerged as one of the top keepers in the league since the start of his career and has certainly earned this special opportunity.”

MLS players going over to Europe to train is becoming a common sight. Whitecap Omar Salgado went to Fulham to train. Thierry Henry is back with Arsenal in the off-season.

Frei made 27 MLS appearances for TFC this season, but was pushed for the No. 1 job late in the season by Milos Kocic. While Frei started in all of the matches in the tournament that was known as the Nutrilite Canadian Championship (it will have a brand-name change for 2012), Kocic became the keeper of choice in TFC’s run through the CONCACAF Champions League. TFC protected both keepers.

“Yeah, that’s definitely a possibility,” Frei told The 11’s Aman Dhanoa at the end of the MLS season, about the possibility of one of the two Reds keepers not being with the team in 2012. “Good thing if you look at it that in a personal way then you’re saying you have two starters here, that for us personally is a good thing too. If we’re both starters then one of us will not be here anymore then hopefully we’ll start somewhere else.”
