TFC signs Spanish midfielder Alvaro Rey By Steven Sandor Posted on July 25, 2013 1 0 786 Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Alvaro Rey Spanish midfielder Alvaro Rey had been on trial with Toronto FC in June. Now, with international slots and cap space cleared thanks to a series of recent roster culls, Rey has officially joined the Reds. The club announced the move on Thursday. Rey played with Xerez in the Spanish second division in 2012/13. He scored three times and added five assists. He received two straight red cards in 28 games played, so this is a player who has a bit of a nasty streak — which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. “Alvaro trained with the team for several weeks last month, and played in a reserve match with us against Montreal. He’s very technical and quick, and is good at taking on defenders,” said Toronto FC President and General Manager Kevin Payne in a release issued by the club. “He offers something different than we typically see in MLS and we think he’ll help our team become more dangerous.”
