On Thursday, the Canadian Soccer Association released a list of 24 players who will represent Canada at this October’s U-17 World Cup. Of the 24, 21 are on the proper roster, while three are alternates. While FIFA has been notified which three players are alternates, who can only play in order to replace an injured member of the main roster, Fleming wouldn’t reveal which three were on the outside of the bubble.

“They are my pick, they’ll always be my pick,” said FC Edmonton’s newest addition Thursday.

But, in his first camp as the national-team coach, the Spaniard has made it clear he wants to look at as many players as he can, both young and old. So, veterans such as Iain Hume, Julian de Guzman, Dwayne De Rosario and Atiba Hutchinson will be making the trip, as will youngsters such as the Vancouver Whitecaps’ Residency’s Jackson Farmer and the Montreal Impact Academy’s Jeremy Gagnon-Lapare.

“Ben has been one of the top young players we have had come through our Residency program and Emmanuel is a raw talent who we are interested in seeing further development,” said Whitecaps coach Martin Rennie in a release issued by the club.

And that means Canada and Jamaica could be playing in forecasted temperatures of 33 C — and that’s before the humidity.

But midfielder Jose Lopez, whose name didn’t appear on the 23-man preliminary roster released last week, is on the final list of 20.

Six members of the Vancouver Whitecaps Residency and five players from TFC Academy are featured on coach Sean Fleming’s pre-tournament roster ahead of the CONCACAF U-20 Championships.

Nick Dasovic has pared the national U-20 team roster down to 20 players, 48 hours before the team opens the CONCACAF Championship in Puebla, Mexico.

While the TFC Academy and Whitecaps Residency players take up 60 per cent of the roster, the player on this squad that has the best chance of breaking into a senior pro squad this season is FC Edmonton Reserves’ Hanson Boakai. Not many training days go by without someone at FCE raving about his potential.

“That’s what made it so frustrating,” said Makubuya. “If we were losing, why not give us a chance to play? But it is a business, and that is how it goes. But it was tough on a lot of us.”
