“The only thing we can control, me as a coach and them as the players, is the better we perform, the better chance we have to be in another club next year or with the San Francisco Deltas,” said Dos Santos. “If San Francisco continues, good. If it doesn’t, and we do well, hopefully we’ll all have jobs in 2018.”

Orlando City’s Cyle Larin, Jacksonville’s Drew Beckie and Ottawa Fury keeper Callum Irving continue to lead their respective leagues when it comes to minutes played by Canadians.

Toronto FC misses a few key regulars, and still is good enough to annihilate the Los Angeles Galaxy, 4-0. For Canadian soccer followers, the big news out of TFC’s weekend win was that Tosaint Ricketts bagged a couple of goals.

But, after the Eddies dominated Indy and won 2-0 at Clarke Stadium, Sunday, they found out they wouldn’t be getting on the plane on Monday. The league announced that the game at Puerto Rico has been postponed. Forecasts are calling for Hurricane Maria to arrive at Puerto Rico Wednesday.

So far this season, 26 Canadians have appeared in MLS matches; but, of those, only five have earned more than 1,000 minutes each. To put that in perspective, 1,000 minutes is just over 11 games of full-game action. More than half are under the 500-minute mark.

“There’s nothing we can do about it as players,” said FCE captain Nik Ledgerwood of the latest episode of As the NASL Turns. “We try to go on with our work, although it is a distraction. It’s your workplace, it’s up in the air. But, at the same token, it’s the same thing as last year. We were dealing with the same thing in the off-season. Nobody knew if there was going to be a league, a team, whatever it was. We’ll continue to work hard and do our stuff, and we hope the fans will come out and continue to support the team.”

The most significant change comes in MLS, where Orlando City, which has been that league’s leader in minutes played by Canadians since First Kick, was finally passed at the top. The Montreal Impact, even with Samuel Piette and Anthony Jackson-Hamel on international duty, has surpassed the Lions in terms of minutes played by Canadians. Patrice Bernier’s 90 minutes played in Saturday’s loss to Chicago helped nudge the Impact ahead.

FC Edmonton’s Allan Zebie scored his first NASL goal, and it stood as the winner as the Eddies defeated the San Francisco Deltas 2-1 in the league’s unofficial Canadian derby.

But we’d be remiss in our duties at The 11 to ignore the fact that the number of minutes for Canadian players at TFC has dwindled over the last couple months.

Some themes we’ve seen over and over again this FCE season played out once again Sunday at Clarke Stadium, as the Eddies had to settle for a 1-1 home draw with Puerto Rico FC.
