Despite being up a man for an hour, FC Edmonton couldn’t score — and, to make matters worse for the home team, the Eddies were caught at the back late in the game, as Luke Mulholland’s goal gave the Tampa Bay Rowdies a 1-0 win.

After two losses on the road, coach Harry Sinkgraven unveiled a new-look lineup. Instead of a 4-3-3, FCE switched to a 4-4-2, with Shaun Saiko moved from the outside to a free attacking midfield role behind the strikers.

After a disheartening 2-0 loss on the road to the Carolina RailHawks on Saturday, the parallels between the Eddies and the Impact of 2011 are more and more evident.

In fact, it’s like fate has taken its revenge on the Eddies. FC Edmonton won its first-ever NASL match at Lockhart Stadium; but, since that win, the Eddies’ performances in Fort Lauderdale have been some of the young franchise’s worst.

In an NASL campaign which has seen FCE flirt with the bottom of the table, an against-all-odds win might be the thing the team needed to help it bond — the kind of win that could turn around a season.

But thanks to some inspired goalkeeping from Lance Parker — which included a penalty save — and a lovely second-half combination play that led to Michael Cox’s goal, the Eddies broke a two-game home winless streak with a gritty 1-0 decision over the Fort Lauderdale Strikers Sunday.

“We had a little talk about it after the game,” said holding midfielder Chris Kooy. “Sixty per cent of the goals we have given up have been on set pieces. So it’s definitely something we have to look at.”

FC Edmonton confirmed that Clarke Stadium, located right next door to Commonwealth Stadium and just steps from the LRT, will be the team’s new home as it hopes for a new soccer-specific stadium to be built in Edmonton. And, during a Thursday press conference at Commonwealth Stadium's Green and Gold Room, FCE also debuted its new Adidas home, road and keeper kits, which sees the black and blue replace the blue and white scheme of the 2011 home kit.

In a game the Eddies needed to win to improve their chances of home-field advantage in the first round of the playoffs, they surrendered a 1-0 lead and lost 2-1 to the Fort Lauderdale Strikers in the regular season finale at Foote Field.

Central defender Paul Hamilton misses Saturday night’s home date with the NSC Minnesota Stars because of yellow-card accumulation. Hamilton picked up a yellow late in Tuesday’s 1-1 draw at Puerto Rico.
