FC Ottawa? Ottawa United? Capital City FC? SC PMO?

Canadian soccer supporters have until Dec. 16 to submit their names of choice for the new Ottawa NASL franchise, which is set to kick off in 2014. The Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group, which owns both the new NASL franchise and the Canadian Football League expansion team which is also set for a 2014 debut, has launched its own name-the-teams contest.

Head to nameourteams.com to submit your ideas.

“The goal is to choose team nicknames that have widespread appeal to all age groups and then develop logos and unique team branding that get people excited about the return of CFL football and the debut of NASL soccer,” said John Pugh, the president of the new NASL franchise. in a release issued by the club.

Pugh was recently named to the USL Hall of Fame as a builder for transforming the Ottawa Fury’s women’s program into a W-League power.

Pugh had previously told The 11 that he wouldn’t be opposed to the CFL and NASL teams carrying the same name and colours, much like we see soccer, handball and basketball teams all belong to the same European clubs.

There is only a couple of verboten names: Roughriders is out, as per agreement with the CFL. That name is Saskatchewan’s now — and won’t come back to Ottawa. And neither the soccer or football team can be named after Ottawa’s failed CFL expansion franchise, the Renegades.
