Official: Impact waives English midfielder Ian Westlake By Steven Sandor Posted on February 28, 2012 Comments Off on Official: Impact waives English midfielder Ian Westlake 0 635 Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Ian Westlake At least Ian Westlake stayed with the Montreal Impact long enough to get a photo of himself in the team’s new MLS jersey. On Monday, the Impact confirmed what had been rumoured all weekend — announcing that the English midfielder had been waived. Westlake has been listed as an injured player, with achilles tendonitis. In July of last year, Westlake signed on with the Impact, and became a fixture in midfield for the team as it tried to rebound from an awful start and push for the playoffs in its final NASL season. Westlake came to Montreal with more than 200 games in the English second and third divisions on his resume. In December, Westlake was inked to a deal for the 2012 MLS season. “Ian’s soccer qualities and competitive nature make him a very good fit for our team moving forward,” said Impact head coach Jesse Marsch when Westlake was inked to the MLS deal. “I know Ian will come into work everyday and give everything he has. He is a real competitor and an excellent player on the field.” Westlake’s removal does open up a roster spot, which helps the chances of two Canadians currently auditioning for spots with the club, top supplemental draft pick Evan James and Academy product Karl Ouimette.
